Bandorama: Caltech-Occidental Concert Band & Jazz Band
"From Earth to the Stars" is the title of the final concert of the Caltech-Occidental Wind Orchestra 2017-18 season, which will celebrate the musical legacy of composer David Maslanka, under the direction of Dr. Glenn D. Price. In addition will be featured the premiere of "The Grand Tour" composed for the COWO by Leslie Deutsch, in commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of Voyager. A Caltech graduate, Dr. Deutsch developed techniques for communicating with the Voyager 2 spacecraft at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). He has also served as Manager of the Deep Space Systems Technology program, and was awarded the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal which led to his meeting with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. An accomplished musician, his scientific work has provided a unique perspective that he brings to this "out of this world" composition.
The Caltech Jazz Band, directed by Barb Catlin, will close the school year out featuring contemporary music by Michael Conrad, Pat Metheny and Alan Ferber, as well as big band classics steeped in swing with charts by Oliver Nelson, Thad Jones, and Bob Florence. Soloists include guitarist Asher Preska-Steinberg (grad student in chemistry), tenor saxophonist Muir Morrison (grad student in physics), trombonist Lee Saper (grad student in geology), Professor Austin Minnich on trombone, and Sophie Miller (grad student in chemistry) on bari sax.
The same concert will be performed on Saturday night, May 12, at 8:00 p.m.
The concerts are free; no tickets or reservations are required.
