Waves and Resonances: Accelerated Green Functions, High-Frequency Asymptotics and Optimization for Simulation and Design
Oscar Bruno, Professor, Applied and Computational Mathematics, California Institute of Technology,

Novel trends in the fields of numerical analysis and computational science seek to reap practical benefits from the use of asymptotic methods and algorithmically accelerated representations of physical quantities by global functions--such as Green functions, Fourier and Chebyshev expansions, and Fourier transforms. We highlight a few such ideas in the context of wave propagation and scattering problems, with applications involving varied and challenging topics, including eigenvalue problems for elliptic operators as well as problems concerning prediction, design and optimization in geometrically realistic and spatio-temporally challenging scientific and engineering contexts.
